An Adventure on Maungatautari

April 16, 2018 Posted by Kiwi Conservation Club

By Joseph (age 9 and a half)

On March 10th we were invited to an adventure with Waikato KCC at Mountain Sanctuary. We had no idea what would be there.  Tom gave us a really good talk about the wildlife there then we went looking for the big blue chickens in the wetlands!  But they ran off when they heard us coming….   So, we headed off to where the tuatara were and we did see two of those.  They looked like statues.  Then we QUIETLY went back and this time we saw two takahē in the wetland area!!

We went on a bush walk afterwards and climbed up a tall canopy tower by a giant rātā tree. At the end some of us saw and heard three bellbirds singing. The whole day was lots and lots of fun!
