Vote Kiwi for Bird Of The Year

October 24, 2017 Posted by Kiwi Conservation Club

By Ryan from Rototuna Primary School

Vote for the intelligent kiwi and the NZ bird. It’s a amazing bird so please vote for it.

Did you know the kiwi is a native bird to NZ? That is why it is special.

Appearance

The kiwi is black and brown, and camouflages well in its surroundings. A kiwi has a large beak for digging underground. That piece is called a bill. Feathers surround the kiwis belly and back.

Diet

Eating and poking it’s bill underground, the kiwi finds worms, earthworms and other animals. Kiwis eat insects, spiders, weta, beetles and berries. Did you know that kiwis eat things bigger than itself?

Behaviour

A kiwi is a nocturnal bird, which means it sleeps in day and hunts at night. Although a kiwi has wings, it can’t fly. Kiwis have sharp claws so they can jump, climb trees, and scratch predators.

Habitat

The kiwi can be found by trees and down in the bushes,  in small burrows underground. They live in these places so no predators attack them.
