Public Conservation Land in New Zealand

April 9, 2018 Posted by Kiwi Conservation Club

About 1⁄3 of NZ’s total land area is conservation land, but it’s not all protected equally. There are three main categories, or groups, of land. This decides what happens, or could happen to it, by law.

After learning what the different groups mean in Wild Things (Winter 2018), find out where your nearest national parks, specially protected areas, and stewardship land are using this map from the Department of Conservation (DOC): http://maps.doc.govt.nz/mapviewer/index.html?viewer=docmaps

On the “Show me” menu, make sure to click the box that says Public Conservation Land and a view like this will come up. Zoom in to look around, or use the search bar at the top. Look for dark green shapes, or lime green ones. Any surprises on how the land has been grouped?
