Building rat trap boxes

August 7, 2023 Posted by Kiwi Conservation Club

With the wet cold weather that winter brings, pest animals such as rats and mice are on the hunt for food. That makes this time of year a great time to start on a journey to making your backyard pest free. KCC Manawatū members began their journey by partnering with the Manawatū Menz Shed to build rat trap boxes.

The Department of Conservation gifted us a rat trap to go in each box. After an afternoon of hammering, screwing, and banging pieces of wood together, each member was able to set a rat trap in their own backyard! As part of the event, we looked at other pest animals which are in our backyard and talked about the damage they can do to our native wildlife. Some animals were easy to spot as pest animals such as possums, stoats, and rats. Others had not been thought of as pest animals before, such as, hedgehogs and cats.
