My Beach Creature

January 20, 2020 Posted by Kiwi Conservation Club

By Oscar (age 12)

In the holidays, me and my family stayed at a holiday house at Ōtaki Beach.  There was lots of plastic rubbish as well as shells on the beach, so I decided to collect it and make a creature out of it all.

His name is Floatsum, and he has a pet squid called Jet. They like to drift around in the current and collect new bits of flotsam and jetsam.

“Flotsam” and “jetsam” are terms used to describe two types of marine debris. Flotsam is debris in the water from boats and ships that was not deliberately thrown overboard. It’s often there as a result from a shipwreck or accident. Jetsam is debris that was deliberately thrown overboard by a crew of a boat or ship.
