Kāhu cares for Tangaroa

July 30, 2018 Posted by Kiwi Conservation Club

Kāhu is keen to find ways to help remove plastic from the ocean. It all started with our daily walks on the beach in Summer. Each time we go, we manage to rescue plastic from being dragged back into the ocean. After a storm we find it too easy to fill a supermarket bag with rubbish.

This made us more interested in plastic pollution, so we watched some videos about the islands of trash floating around in the world’s oceans. This upset four-year-old Kāhu a lot, he wanted to do more than picking up rubbish on the beach. That is when we stumbled on The Ocean Clean up. Inspired by the KCC challenge and The Ocean Clean up, Kāhu decided to set up a stall at our gate. He sells the native seedlings and saplings that are eco sourced from our yard. We have many birds spreading seed for us and we have more healthy plants than room for them all. The most popular are Karaka, Makomako and Tī Kouka.

We’ve only just begun but we hope that in time and with a bit of advertising, Kāhu can reach the goal of $100 he has set to donate to The Ocean Clean up. After that we have some other charities in mind.

Watch this space, Kahu is currently brainstorming ideas for a digger that is able to drive along beaches and only remove plastic from the coastlines. Wouldn’t that be fantastic?!
