3 Reasons why Kea should be Bird Of The Year

October 24, 2017 Posted by Kiwi Conservation Club

By Leeschen from Rototuna Primary School

Did you know there is a Bird of the Year competition? I think the kea should be Bird of the Year, here are some reasons why:

  • Kea are endangered birds. Rats and stoats eat kea eggs, and if they eat all the kea eggs, we will soon lose most kea and not have them in Bird of the Year anymore.
  • Kea are more intelligent birds than any other type of bird. They love to explore new places, and they are attracted to human activity and belongings.
  • Keas are very beautiful birds. Others will be other colours like blue and grey, for example, most are green and brown. I think the green colour on the kea is for it to camouflage in the forest.

That’s three reasons why kea should be Bird of the Year.
