What I do to help freshwater and Lake Wanaka stay clean -from Wild Things issue 152

August 23, 2021 Posted by Kiwi Conservation Club

By Adam Southerland

I have done lots of planting with my family. We planted 40 plants by Lake Wanaka this weekend.

We have also done plantings at Penrith Wetland, Glendhu Wetland, Albert Town Lagoon and by lake Wanaka. We planted native trees, flaxes and grasses.

The plants help keep the water clean in our lake. They help stop erosion, filter out dirt and pollution. Penrith Wetland is super important because it filters out the storm water that goes down the drains before it goes into the lake.

The plants come from the Te Kakano community nursery. Sometimes in the school holidays we help weed the plants, wash the pots and do other jobs at the nursery.

This is me bracken bashing. Squash bracken to make room for the plants is my favorite job.
This is a flax it planted. It has grown a lot.
Paradise ducks have moved to Penrith wetland.
