My fire ant investigation in lockdown

July 19, 2020 Posted by Kiwi Conservation Club

By Oscar (age 7)

During lockdown, we found an ant on our deck.  We thought it was a fire ant.  We researched fire ants on the computer and we sent a photo to the iNaturalist app to see if someone could identify it for us.

Four different people wrote messages on the app. They said that it was not a fire ant.  They thought it was a winged queen chelaner ant.

I was happy that it wasn’t a fire ant because fire ants are pests.
