Fairy tern, Dotterel and Kōkako

January 17, 2018 Posted by Kiwi Conservation Club

By the van der Loos family

While on holiday at Omaha over Christmas, we spent a lot of time at the bird sanctuary spotting endangered birds.  After reading the information about the critically endangered fairy tern, we then saw one fly over us and saw the difference between that and the usual ones we see there.

We also found a dotterel egg that had been laid below the high tide line and was about to get washed away.  We put it carefully further up the beach, and found another egg that was empty and had a small hole in the side of it – a predator must have got into this one.

We like to check the traps too and we found a hedgehog in one.

We saw lots of baby dotterels and oyster catchers, they are so cute!
