Lounging with Lizards

August 3, 2015 Posted by Kiwi Conservation Club

So what’s it like being a KCC member on the North Shore? Well for starters you get to meet some rather interesting locals, all thanks to Manuela, her army of helpers from the Herpetological Society and our wonderful KCC co-ordinators.

Back in June KCC kids got the chance to experience some of our native geckos and skinks and learn all about them, including how researchers like Manuela from Massey University are helping to look after them in the wild. The event was a sell-out. Can’t think why! 🙂

Do you go on KCC trips in your area? Tell us about them. Are there no organised KCC trips where you live? Get a group together and try one of our activities from Wild Things magazine or on our website here or organise your own trip with family and friends, just like the ones you see here. Find out more about our North Shore KCC branch here.

Report back to us and we might print your story here!

Hi KCC. My wife, Lisa and I are interested in the KCC for our two nieces, ages 9 and 11 living in Auckland. We live in Sydney now, but volunteered for a similar Junior Naturalists club while we were living in Canada. We would love to see them learning more about nature and conservation. Wish we’d found you early enough to get them into that Tiritiri Matangi trip! KCC looks like a great organization, but we’re wondering if our older niece might be too old for it. Are there age limits? What is the typical age range of members? Can you recommend any other organizations for “tweenies” if she’s too old already? Thanks for your help.

      Kia ora,
Thanks so much for your message. I think both your nieces would get a great deal out of it as many of our members are around that age and as the trips require an adult to take them along it means the whole family gets to experience places like Tiritiri Matangi together. I’m sure the girls would love ‘Wild Things’ our quarterly the magazine too. We are also looking for some junior reporters to photograph, film and write for our new website and share their experiences with nature, so hopefully there’s something which will appeal to all ages. The link to joining is here: https://secure.forestandbird.org.nz/shop/membershipitem.asp?itemid=109 It would make a great Christmas present! 🙂 Please let me know if there is anything else I can help with. Thanks again for your message. Mel and the KCC Team
