Ned’s amazing find

August 13, 2024 Posted by Kiwi Conservation Club

In the weekend, I was lifting up ponga logs lying on the ground in the bush at home and this huge, giant centipede crawled out. I found a stick and picked it up and walked all the way back to my house to show my mum and brothers. The Māori name for giant centipede is “hura” or “hara”. This one had 21 pairs of legs and they were orange with bright bits of blue in them too. The very front legs are poisonous claws. Hura can poison animals, but not humans. But, if they bite you it will really hurt!
