Vote Kākāpō for Bird Of The Year

October 24, 2017 Posted by Kiwi Conservation Club

By Helen from Rototuna Primary School

Do you know which bird to vote for in Bird of the Year?

The answer is simple – vote kākāpō!

Kākāpōs are in serious danger! Rats are destroying their nests, eating their eggs and chicks. But wait, there’s more – stoats are hunting grown kākāpō!

In 1930, kākāpōs disappeared from the North Island completely! But, luckily, there were still some remaining kākāpōs in the South Island. They were able to avoid being eaten by creatures that hunted by sight – they would freeze among all the leafy branches. This method might have helped them get away from sight hunters, but not so well for smell hunters.

Kākāpōs are not at all like other birds who are endangered. They have to live on highly protected islands around New Zealand such as Maud, Codfish, Anchor, and Stewart islands.

But the high protection is not enough, and you could help. VOTE KAKAPO NOW!!!
