KCC Book Reviews: Omnibird: An Avian Investigator’s Handbook

November 27, 2025 Posted by Kiwi Conservation Club

We asked one of our KCCers, Emilia, to review this new pukapuka. Here’s what she had to say:

Hi,

I’m Emilia (age 10) and I’m very honoured to be chosen to review Omnibird. I like how Giselle Clarkson writes about nature and science but makes it funny and quirky. Her illustrations are really awesome.

I love nature and want to be a writer and ornithologist when I grow up so this job is perfect for me! One of my favourite books is The Observologist – one of Giselle Clarkson’s previous books!

This book helped me identify a fledgling and teach what I learnt to others. When I was coming up my street with my Dad, I saw an interesting bird on my neighbour’s fence. I realised it was a fledgling because I could see remnants of its baby beak and fluffy down still clinging to it. It was also quite chubby and had a stubby tail. It looked like a song thrush, and I’d seen some adult thrushes whacking snails on the ground and eating them nearby earlier that morning. I told Dad it was a fledgling and showed him, my Mum and sister, Hazel, the page in the book.

I also found it interesting learning about bird anatomy – who knew birds secretly had such an incredible range of tongues!

I’ve learnt how to quietly observe birds and identify more species.

Thank you for picking me to review this incredible book. I hope others will enjoy it just as much as I did!
