Government says ‘no’ to mining our special wild places.

Wed, 21 Jul 2010

Our wildlife let out a collective cheer yesterday when it was announced the Government wasn’t going to try and mine our top conservation land.

The Government was looking at mining were some of our most precious conservation land – our National Parks and other protected areas.

They had been looking at opening mining in the Coromandel, the Eastern Paparoas and Great Barrier Island.

These areas contained threatened kiwi & bats, endangered ducks and highly endangered frogs.

The Government changed its mind after it received over 37,000 letters and lots of people took to the streets to protest against the planned changes.

Over 40,000 people marched on the streets of Auckland to show their anger against this proposal, and many thousands took the streets to say our National Parks were ‘too precious to mine’.

Just goes to show the power of the people!
