The Importance of our Native Forests

Why are our native forests so important?

New Zealand native forests need to be protected and looked after; they are important for lots of reasons.

Home / Habitat – Trees are tremendous because they provide a home for our native creatures. Many of our native birds nest in holes in our trees, which gives them protection from predators, warmth and a place to keep dry. Others nest in the treetops, so they can see their enemies from afar!

Our puriri moth, can pretty much only live in our puriri tree. It’s the same situation for our kauri snail. If we take away the homes of these creatures, then they simply won't survive.

One of the main causes of species extinction is the lack of habitat (places to live) for our native creatures!

Food – There is lots of food for the animals in the forest - leaves, nectar and berries from the trees. And some of the smaller animals, like the insects that live in the forest, are food for the bigger animals, like the birds.

Water cycle – Forests are part of the water cycle. They cycle water between the soil and the atmosphere which helps make rain.

Erosion – Forests protect the soil from erosion and reduce flooding. leaves catch the rain and let it drip gently to the ground. The forest floor which is thick with dead leaves which soak up rain. The rain water is then trickles into streams or soaks deeper underground to feed the streams weeks and months later. This reduces flooding and erosion.

Climate Change – Forests are made up of trees, and trees absorb carbon dioxide – the major ‘greenhouse’ gas - and turn it into wood which is a way of storing carbon. Trees also produce oxygen, and all living creatures need oxygen, so we need trees!

Recreation - Forests are wonderful places for us to enjoy nature and see native birds and other native wildlife. Forest are peaceful and beautiful.

Tourism - Natural areas are visited by thousands of tourists each year. Natural areas, including forests, are important to local businesses and the national economy.
